Akihabara Electronics District

Akihabara (秋葉原), also known as Akihabara Electric Town (秋葉原電気街). Its name is frequently shortened to Akiba in Japan.

Akihabara is best-known as one of the largest shopping areas on Earth for electronic, computer, anime, and otaku goods, including new and used items.
The market grew out of the ruins of World War II when the Japanese army had surplus equipment they wanted to dispose of. Students from the nearby universities, who desperately needed money, bought the surplus army parts and made radios - status symbols and much in demand - to sell on roadsides or in tiny shops here. Akihabara and electronics have been synonymous ever since.
